Law Enforcement

I was walking into work in the middle of the night at 6:30 A.M. A woman who arrived at the same time was walking with me and started complaining about the stupid cop who pulled her over this morning and about how he must not have had anything to do. There were other comments about donuts, free coffee, etc. What was this woman doing? Well, she was pulled over for going 79 mph... the speed limit? 55 mph. 24 mph OVER the posted speed limit... right, this cop had nothing else to do but pull you over for no good reason. Idiot. Clearly, this woman and I do not know each other very well or she would have never sought sympathy from me. It was tough, but I refrained from telling her what a moron she is for complaining and blaming someone else for something SHE could have easily prevented (and the part about how the cop was "hiding" so it wasn't fair? Too F-ing bad). Really, how ignorant. (Also, while we're on the subject... police don't make the laws, they just enforce them).

I have incredible respect for the men and women in the law enforcement profession. They see people at their worst every day and most of the time they become jaded and cynical because of it. It's a thankless job, but they choose to fight the good fight because someone has to do it. Unlike many of the kids I see today, my siblings and I were taught to respect police officers and address them as Officer so and so, or Sir or Ma'am.

As a matter of fact, I went through the police academy and almost became a police officer. I still wonder sometimes if it's something I would like to pursue again. You see, being around it my entire life, I have always been interested in the criminal justice system. I know many police officers, but closest to me are my dad and oldest brother. Am I biased? Possibly a little bit. But I think the majority of police officers are good people. I am not naive enough to believe that there aren't some bad apples, but I don't think there are nearly as many as some people would like to believe. Since the bad apple concept applies to ALL professions, I can't seem to understand why it's police officers who are constantly bashed.

If you are still interested in reading, take a look at this... which I wrote for my high school English class.

Over the years, as I have watched my dad and brother pin on their badges while getting ready for their shifts, I have often wondered: If the badge could talk, what would it say? If the badge could see, what has it seen? As I stared at the badge, the visions showed me reflections of a society that has become apathetic to crime, a judicial system that is too lenient, and criminals who have become fearless in the face of any authority.

Reflected in the badge are vivid pictures of what police officers see every day, and what we, as a society, pretend does not exist. Pictures of rape, child abuse, and spousal abuse are vividly reflected. There is the constant reflected video of gang slayings, shootings, innocent victims killed, and the still shots of drug deals, stabbings, and murder, to name a few. Along with these are the close up images of drunk driving, prostitution, burglaries, and suicide. If the badge could talk, it would have some powerful stories to tell, and questions to ask society. What happened to America; where did all this crime come from? Why did that father beat his child to death? Why did that drunk driver get behind the wheel and kill innocent victims, then survive?

These reflections can often be seen by a police officer in one eight hour shift. Can you imagine how many adrenaline rushes occur in that short time frame; how on every call, they do not know what to expect? Is there someone with a gun? Is my life in danger? When will my backup arrive? The old saying, “it’s an ugly job, but someone has to do it,” could not be more true than in the law enforcement profession.

So, when I welcome my dad home, his shoulders drooping as if he has the weight of the world on them, I realize, he does. As I watch him take off the tools of his trade – his gun, his badge, his bulletproof vest – I am very sad for what he has seen while on duty. Yet, I am extremely proud of the job he has chosen. My oldest brother and I have chosen to follow in his footsteps. This is a tribute for us all.

Families of police officers have heavy loads to carry. We are supposed to be the pillars of society; we are supposed to set examples. We are expected to act normal in our abnormal worlds and never have negative attitudes. After all, our loved ones are just “pigs” who ride around in their squad cars eating donuts and drinking “free” coffee all day and night. Well America, look again. Next time you see a squad car go by with lights and sirens going and wonder what kind of call they are going on – a shooting, a burglary, an accident with injuries – ask yourself, would you like to exchange places with them?

We families spend holidays without our loved ones; we miss their presence on special occasions, because they have to work. Because someone we love dearly has chosen to become a police officer, our lives are not normal. And for that, I am thankful. As the daughter and sister of police officers, my life has not been “normal,” but it has been filled with love, support, pride, and incredible respect for the law enforcement profession. Only the people who have lived this type of lifestyle can truly understand law enforcement officers and what their job means to them. It is the love and support of family and friends that keeps a police officer going. I would not want my dad or my brother in any other profession, and I could not be more proud and aware of the job police officers do.

P.S. I really think police officers should be allowed to write tickets for being stupid when the people they are dealing with act in this fashion.

The Things She Says...

The weekend went by way too fast! We spent a lot of time with my niece (we'll call her E), which is always fun. We headed to the pumpkin patch Saturday so she could pick out her pumpkin for Halloween. This is a yearly event. The girl is only going to be 3 in a few months, but she finds it amusing to pick out the biggest (heaviest!) pumpkins for her dad and M to carry around until she isn't satisfied with any of them and decides on a small pumpkin she is able to carry herself. But more on that later. I have pictures.

My favorite part of the time spent with E occurred yesterday. I was on babysitting duty so my sister in law could get some things done before her and my brother go on vacation next week. I met up with my sister in law at Macy's in the mall (our favorite store... my credit card proves that to be true). Before leaving, we had to stop at the shoe department (of course!) to take a look. E and I were going back and forth asking each other which shoes we liked. She finally went up to a beautiful black pair of Coach pumps and the conversation went like this...

E: Aunt Christy, do you like these?

Me: Yes baby, those are beautiful!

E: Well, Uncle M will buy them for you.

Me: That's a wonderful idea, baby.

E: Let's get him on the phone.

And then we proceeded to call my boyfriend (yes, she refers to him as Uncle and I'm slighly jealous at times because she absolutely adores him) and E tells him all about the shoes and how he should buy them for me because I'm the best Aunt ever (Uh, that part may or may not have involved bribing her with a lollipop).

Sigh. My sister in law has taught the girl well!

This Did Just Happen

I went to the grocery store at lunch today to pick up a few things... most importantly, cream for my coffee here at work. Anyway, as I'm walking in I had this conversation with stranger man...

SM: Excuse me, do you go to Joe's Gym?

SM: Miss, I'm talking to you, do you go to Joe's Gym?

Me: Oh, sorry, no, I've never heard of Joe's Gym.

SM: Oooh girl, you mean with a figure like that, you're trying to tell me you don't work out?

Me: Well, that's not what I sa...

SM: Girl, I'm interested in bein' your baby daddy.

Me: (Totally at a loss for words, which rarely happens). No thanks, I already have a few of those.

SM: Ouch, Ouch.

Now, there are a few things going on here. Clearly, your eyes need to be checked if you think I got this figure from working out... more like, I don't work out nearly enough. But thanks for trying anyway.
Second, your CHILD is with you and you are trying to pick up women at the grocery store in front of him? Classy, classy.

**P.S. I don't really have a few baby daddies. Actually, I don't have any at all.

Even In His Own Home

Have you heard about this story?

http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/local/101909_man_caught_making_coffee_naked_faces_charges

This man was arrested for being naked in HIS OWN HOUSE while he was making coffee in his kitchen.

A woman walking with a 7 year old boy called police to report this. The man was arrested for indecent exposure. Wow. How does this even happen? Perhaps the woman should be arrested for being a peeping Tom?

I'm always walking around my house with barely anything on. Guess I need to be more careful.

Fall Is My Favorite Season

I love everything about Fall. The weather is perfect and I wish it could stay this way all year.

I love Fall clothes and pumpkin flavored anything. I love football and bonfires and Halloween.... I absolutely love Halloween.

In honor of Fall, here are a two of my favorite recipes, lowfat of course.

Reduced Fat Pumpkin Cheesecake

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:

1/2 cup Ginger wafer cookie crumbs (about 10-12 wafers)
1 8-ounce block of fat-free cream cheese, softened
1 8-ounce block of reduced fat ceam cheese, softened
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup egg substitute

Preparation:Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray bottom of a 7-inch removable-bottomed tart pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. Sprinkle cookie crumbs on bottom of pan. Spray briefly with cooking spray and press crumbs down. Cook base for 10 minutes, then remove from oven.
Place cream cheeses, pumpkin, spices, vanilla and sugar in a large mixing bowl. With an electric mixer beat on medium until throughly blended. Add egg substitute and beat on low until blended.
Pour pumpkin cream cheese mixture on to ginger cookie crumb base.
Bake cheesecake for 40 minutes until just set.
Serves 6-8.

Pumpkin Oatmeal Muffins

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup quick oats
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 cup canned pumpkin
3/4 cup fat-free milk
1/3 cup canola oil
1 egg lightly beaten, or 2 egg whites

Preparation:Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper cases. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. In a medium bowl, combine the pumpkin, milk, oil and egg(s), blending well. Stir pumpkin mixture into dry ingredients until the dry ingredients are just moist. Fill muffin cases evenly and bake for 22-25 minutes.

Enjoy!

Rant

The three day weekend was fabulous. Very relaxing... and my car is now fixed and looks brand new again. I'm not ready for another 5 day work week. Oh well, hopefully it will be a quick one.

My rant for the day...

There is a girl, J, who has been a good friend of mine since first grade. She lives in Columbus, about an hour and a half away, but when she comes back home she usually lets several of us know so that we can hopefully get together and catch up. Well, the last few times she has come home, she lets everyone know... except me. I knew something was up when she didn't even say happy birthday to me back in June. She can't even use the "I forgot" excuse, since she's been my friend since FIRST GRADE. I refused to let it bother me. That is until I heard through grape vine exactly what her problem with me is.

My boyfriend.

Yep, her problem is my boyfriend. Why? She has only met him once and he was nothing but nice to her. Well, you see my absolutely fantastic boyfriend is quite a few years older than me. I admit, this bothered me for about 5 minutes, then I was over it. Why should I let this bother me? I am the happiest I have ever been... honestly, I could not ask for more. I am a lucky girl. My family loves him, and our friends... our good friends, are happy for us. The age difference doesn't bother anyone, except for J, I guess.

Seriously, you are going to ignore me because you don't like the fact that I am dating someone who is older than me. Really? This, coming from a girl who wants to go out and "get wasted" every chance she gets and complains because she has to work a normal job with normal hours, like most adults do. Life is soooo difficult to get used to now that she is out of college (that mom and dad foot the bill for) and has to have a *gasp* job which means she can't party all the time like she used to. We are 26 years old, grow the F up!

I'm pretty much over this. But it just bothers me that someone you have been friends with for about 20 years would be so petty and immature. What is wrong with people?

Bank of America... Suck It

Dear Bank of America,

What the HELL?

I recently received a letter from you stating my credit card with you will now be assessed an annual fee of $59 which will be billed to my February statement each year. For? Oh, for my serious delinquency and recent pattern of payments? Oh, ok.

Wait a minute... come again?

I have had this credit card in my posession for quite some time. Since I was legally able to have a credit card. As a matter of fact, it was my first one. Never have I made a late payment. Not even when I was 18, poor, in college, and had a continuous balance. Nope, never. So I am not quite sure what YOUR definition is of "seriously delinquency" is, but I'm pretty sure this doesn't fit my situation.

My pattern of payments? Sorry, I'm confused on this one, too. This credit card of mine has a $0 balance. You see, I only use this card in emergency situations. While I have had a few, there hasn't been anything recent, so my balance has been $0 for a while now.

Furthermore, I am quite disappointed with your customer service. One, I can hardly understand the few people that I spoke with. Second, even when these individuals admitted my account doesn't qualify as being "seriously delinquent," nor has there been a problem with my "recent pattern of payments," my $59 annual fee still stands.

Bank of America, clearly, you FAIL.

However, thanks for being sure to mention that you appreciate my business and look forward to meeting my credit card needs. But sorry, this relationship isn't working for me anymore. What's that? If I accept this change and allow you to charge my credit card for absolutely no reason, then I will continue to enjoy valuable benefits? Wow, what an offer. But please understand when I tell you, F off!

Best Regards,
No longer your valuable customer

I've been MIA. This is because I've been sick, so there's really nothing exciting to talk about since I haven't really done much except sleep!!

I got a flu shot about 3 weeks ago and the very next day I started getting sick. I went to the doctor and and he gave me some antibiotics and when I was done taking those, felt fine for a day or two... then got sick AGAIN!! I am finally starting to feel a little better (my headache that I've had for a week decided to go away), but I can't hear out of my left ear because it has been clogged since Saturday! Yuck. So, I just made another doctor's appointment.

I swear, this is all thanks to the flu shot I got 3 weeks ago. We can get them for free through work and many people take advantage of this. I've worked for my company for 8 years but this is only the second time I've decided to get a flu shot (and only because M, who works here as well, pretty much made me... and my mom too, she insists EVERY year that THIS flu season will be worse than last year's). Last time I got this shot, I got sick right afterwards as well... but I thought, oh well, maybe a coincidence. After getting sick this time, NO more flu shots for me. I'm done.

Anyway... I went to my friend's Arbonne party. Have you heard of it? It's skin care and make up products. Check it out at:

https://www.arbonne.com/shop_online/shopOnline.asp

And take a look at some of the before and after photos.

This stuff is amazing! I love it. And it's made with all natural ingredients. Let me tell you - I have had a lot of skin problems. I am 26 years old and my face still is always breaking out. Clinique has basically been the only make up/skin care products I can use, and even then, I still get breakouts quite often, just not as bad as I used to. I think I may be switching to Arbonne for good. If you use products from clinique, lancome, etc., the prices are very much comparable. I can't even tell you how many different products I have tried over the years... if you are going to spend the money, you should spend it on something that works!

Trust me, I've done some research and am completely grossed out by some of the products I put on my skin. Just google it. For example, I googled skin care products and animal by products. It's gross. Not to mention some of the fillers that are used in some products. No wonder they cause skin problems!

I'll leave you with that to think about.

Later lovers.

First Day Back To Work After A Long Weekend...

And I'm in a craptastic mood, which is mostly related to work issues that aren't even worth mentioning here.

Moving on...

We visited Geneva this past weekend with a few other couples to visit several of the wineries. It was fun while it lasted. I was done drinking wine by 6:00 pm Saturday. Yes folks, I was completely passed out in the hotel room at that time. I was wide awake by 11:00 pm, but everyone else was done drinking by then, too. This past weekend has proved to me that I can no longer drink as much as I used to be able to!

In other news, I bought a brand new Toyota Camry about a month and a half ago. I've had nothing but bad luck with it. After having it for only a few weeks, I backed up into another car... no damage to the other car whatsoever, but there is a slight crease in my back bumper and the trunk sticks a little bit when opening it now. Luckily, the crease is really no big deal and you can't even tell it is there. However, over the weekend, we had another incident. The boyfriend was driving my car and kind of scraped against a post in the parking lot. No one in the car felt it, but we saw the damage when we got out of the car.

Now, this was nothing compared to what it originally looked like. It was completely dented in. However, my friend and her boyfriend were with us and since her boyfriend owns a body shop, he was able to pop the dent out. Now we just need to have this repainted, which he is also helping us out with. I suppose it could be a lot worse, but it's still an aggravation.

Here We Go Again

I have been thinking of starting a blog for some time now. I have even started one, then deleted it so I could start over. So, here it is... I'm sticking with it this time.

This isn't a mommy blog... I don't have any kids. Unless you count my two adorable cats, Bailey & Jameson (who devote their lives to destroying things).

And Stewart, too - my boyfriend's chihuahua-terrier mix. Although very cute, the dog hates me. More about that later.

It's not a wedding blog. While I do have a wonderful boyfriend, there are currently no marriage plans in the works. Although I like to travel, this isn't a travel blog, either. This blog will just be the random thoughts that pop into my head on a daily basis and about my perspective on life.

So, a little about me...

I'm Christy - a twenty something living in Ohio where I live with my 2 cats. Soon, the boyfriend (Let's call him "M") and I will be co-habitating. This will surely be a very interesting experience. Above, I mentioned Stewart, my boyfriend's dog. Clearly, this dog is bipolar. Whenever M is not home, or just happens to be outside, Stewart is my best friend. He lays with me, follows me around, lets me pet him, etc. As soon as M is in the room, NO WAY... the little F'er turns on me. If I even think about touching M or getting up to go to another room, this dog barks his head off at me. We thought he would quit doing this after some time... but 10 months later, Stewart is still a spaz. Not to mention, my cats will be coming with me when I move in with M and I'm pretty sure Stewart will attempt to eat them. We need to figure out how we're going to deal with that whole thing... and soon!

Let's see, what else? I work in purchasing for a power generation company. It's very interesting, especially since my bachelors degree is in criminal justice/sociology. Yep, I thought I wanted to be a cop. THOUGHT. After going through the police academy, I decided, no, not so much. I have a law enforcement family and have always found the criminal justice field interesting. However, police officers do NOT get paid nearly enough for the jobs they do. So I stuck with purchasing. It has its challenges, but I like my job, most of the time.

I am very sarcastic, most of the time probably too sarcastic, and even kind of funny sometimes. I am always brutally honest and probably am the person who gives you the advice that you didn't even ask for. What can I say, I'm opinionated.

Well, that's it for now. Welcome to my blog.
